What is electrical certification?

Electrical certification is a step businesses can take to prove their technical competence and compliance with the standards and regulations governing electrical work in the UK. A business can only become certified if it meets certain standards and prerequisites, which are rigorously checked on application and on a regular basis (usually annually) via an assessment once initial certification has been achieved.

Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales (and the equivalent building standards in Scotland) require certain types of domestic electrical work to be notified to the authorities to ensure they’re compliant with the relevant regulations and standards. While this is vital to ensure safe installations, it can be very time-consuming and expensive for customers, taking weeks or months to gain approval and costing hundreds or even thousands of pounds.

Businesses certified on a competent person scheme (or the Approved Certifier of Construction Scheme in Scotland), however, are deemed competent to self-certify their work meets the relevant standards and issue the notification to Building Control. This usually takes a few minutes and costs just a few pounds per notification, which is not only convenient for the customer, but makes your business a much more attractive prospect than a non-certified competitor’s.
