In the electrotechnical industry, a commitment to safety, competence, and technical integrity is paramount. Since the Grenfell Tower fire, we have seen sweeping reforms to building safety laws and a focus on the competence and qualifications of all those working in the built environment.
At the same time, we’ve seen an increase in the use of forged certificates, qualifications, and other proofs of competence such as ECS gold cards. Scammers have seen a gap in the market for ‘quick fixes’ and forged documents, as workers who don’t meet qualification requirements seek ways to remain working in the industry.
This situation has the potential to damage the integrity of our profession, break public trust, and create real risks for consumers, certification bodies, employers, and the wider electrotechnical sector. In this article, we’ll explore why rigorous qualification checks matter, the types of fake credentials and qualifications to look out for, and the steps your organisation should be taking to identify and prevent the use of fraudulent and misleading documentation.
Why verification matters
1. It protects the public
Individuals who use fake credentials may not have a good enough understanding of the Wiring Regulations, safe isolation practices, installation requirements, or inspection and testing fundamentals. And this can result in dangerous electrical hazards like electric shocks and fires, causing injury or even death.
Ensuring your people are genuinely qualified helps keep people safe in their homes, workplaces, and public spaces.
2. It upholds the integrity of the industry
Fake qualifications undermine the integrity of the industry and dilute the credibility of professionals who have invested years into entering the industry via legitimate pathways.
3. It ensures compliance
To belong to a certification body in the UK, your business must comply with frameworks such as the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification (EAS), which requires individuals to hold appropriate, valid, and recognised qualifications for the work they undertake.
When your business makes a habit of verifying your operatives’ qualifications, it protects you against the risk of compliance failures and reputational damage.4. It reduces risk to your business
Customers expect electricians working on their property to be competent. Your business must therefore be confident that your employees meet this expectation.
If you don’t verify your people’s qualifications, it opens your business up to all sorts of risks, including costly remedial work, enforcement action, insurance invalidation and civil suits against your business.
Where are these fake qualifications coming from?
Knowing what kinds of fake/inappropriate qualifications are out there and who is creating them is the first step towards weeding them out of your business.
1. Counterfeit certificates and skills cards
Scammers or individuals skilled in editing are using software to produce certificates and skills cards like the ECS gold card, which are designed to look as though they have been issued by reputable awarding bodies, or are creating entirely fraudulent documents that imitate official credentials.
2. Unregulated training providers
Rogue training providers may issue qualification certificates that look official, but which are not aligned with national standards, aren’t backed by an awarding organisation, and/or aren’t recognised by the EAS.
3. ‘Fast-track’ or online-only pathways
Short courses claiming to make someone a qualified electrician within a matter of weeks often mislead individuals into believing they hold equivalent qualifications to an industry-recognised Level 3 NVQ. They do not.
Entering the industry via legitimate pathways like apprenticeships takes three to four years, so a five-week programme clearly isn’t going to cut it!
How to spot fake electrical qualifications
1. Check the awarding organisation
Always confirm the certificate was issued by a legitimate and approved awarding body, such as:
Search for official logos and qualification codes on the awarding body’s official website and cross-reference these with the certificate or document to ensure they’re legitimate. If you can get hold of a certificate you know is genuine, compare the two to check the certificate layout and numbering look right.
If in doubt, contact the awarding organisation directly.
2. Use online verification tools
Most awarding bodies store certificate and qualification data digitally, enabling you to verify the presented certificate to the one they have on file. For example, EAL’s Certificate Checker enables you run the individual’s name, date of birth, and certificate number to check it’s a match. If you’re looking to check an ECS gold card, you can use the card search tool on the ECS website. And you can check an AM2 end-point assessment certificate via the NET AM2 checker.
3. Inspect overall document quality
Fake certificates are often inconsistently formatted, whereas authentic documents follow an established template.
Watch out for:
- incorrect fonts
- poor logo reproduction
- low-resolution graphics
- spelling mistakes
- unusual formatting.
4. Cross-check with training providers
If a certificate claims to come from a training provider, confirm the provider is approved to deliver that qualification. Many unregulated or fake training providers issue certificates for qualifications they are not authorised to offer.
You can usually search for approved training centres on the awarding body’s website. For example, City & Guilds allows you to search for training centres locally, or filter by the training course or qualification offered.
5. Confirm the qualification meets EAS requirements
Even if a certificate is genuine, it’s important to check the qualification itself is aligned with EAS requirements. Remember, all certified businesses across the industry have to comply with the EAS.
The EAS Qualifications Guide provides a list of all the qualifications deemed to meet mandatory technical competence requirements relating to:
- core technical competence
- periodic inspection and testing
- low carbon installations
- Wiring Regulations.

Putting in place a strong internal process
Organisations can reduce the risk to which they could be exposed by implementing a structured qualification checking process. Here are a few suggestions for what this could involve.
- Use a standard checklist for checking the qualifications of all applicants to your business.
- Implement two-step verification – visual inspection, followed by confirmation with the awarding body.
- Retain evidence of checks for assessment and audit purposes.
- Train staff in how to recognise misleading or fake certificates.
- Implement reverification when individuals increase their scope of work or knowledge of the Regulations.
By implementing some or all of these steps, you can protect your organisation from the risks posed by underqualified individuals, protect public safety, and safeguard the integrity of our industry.
